The Windrush Generation

Yesterday my colleague David Lammy MP gave a very powerful and damning indictment of the record of this government to its own citizens. He of course was talking about the appalling situation that has affected those collectively known as the 'Windrush generation. We know from those coming forward to their local MPs and BBC investigations that people have lost their jobs, rights to health and benefits and faced deportation despite being able to show they have paid tax and National Insurance for decades.

Yesterday the answers from the Home Secretary Amber Rudd to very simple questions and requests for assurances that no one would be deported were worrying and unsatisfactory. It's deeply alarming that a senior member of the government holding one of the key offices of state is so out of touch with the actions of her department. There were simply no answers to the number of people denied their rights as British citizens. Yesterday MP's were given the impression of an autonomous Home Office making decisions contrary to the words of the Home Secretary.

David referred to the situation as a 'National Day of Shame', he was right. This is a scandal, one created in Downing Street from poisonous right wing rhetoric has shaped government policy that is causing much hurt and pain to British citizens. I hope we will hear very soon that this situation is being resolved, but as I read the newspaper this morning I see more heartbreaking cases of threatened deportation. The Prime Minister and the Home Secretary must act now.
