For those who might have missed my previous posts, Harriet Slater was one of my predecessors as an MP for Stoke-on-Trent, representing our great city from 1953 till 1966. During her thirteen years in Westminster she became the first ever woman to become a Government Whip, smashing through a glass ceiling at a time when politics remained a much more male dominated world.
However, her achievements as a politician and as a woman in politics have now sadly been forgotten. To rectify this myself and Ruth Smeeth MP have decided to host the Harriet Slater Lecture Series.
The first of these will be at 6pm on the 6th of July at the Co-operative Academy, Westport Road, Stoke-on-Trent, ST64LD.
In honour of Harriet Slater's achievement in being the first woman to become a Government Whip, we've invited The Rt. Hon Baroness Taylor of Bolton who became the first woman to be the Chief Government Whip between 1998 and 2001. She was also the first woman to become the Leader of the House of Commons and remains an active member of the House of Lords to this day.
I can't wait for this fantastic event and I hope you'll be able to join us on the 6th of July. You can find more details at this Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/2075593352521776/
