Gareth criticises public sector pay cap

Questions on the new NHS pay deal: Is Jeremy Hunt incapable of giving an answer to a question about the NHS?

I welcome the news that the government are set to offer an improved pay offer to NHS staff, but these are the same staff that have seen their real-terms income fall by an estimated 14% in the past eight years. Both UNISON and the GMB deserve immense credit for their work on getting an improved deal for their members. Yet today, when I asked a simple question about the pay deal and the future direction of this government's attitude to pay for our public sector workers Jeremy Hunt couldn't even bother to give an answer.

I hope today is the start of the government recognising that the public sector pay cap isn't only hurting those directly involved, but also harming our economy and making it difficult to recruit people into our public services. But I fear it might be a cynical attempt to deflect attention from the ongoing NHS crisis that Jeremy Hunt has presided over and made worse. I'll be keeping a close eye on this.

So whilst Tory ministers tour the TV studios lauding today's decision. Remember this is still a real terms pay cut for NHS staff.
