Let's bring Channel 4 to Stoke-on-Trent!
So, this morning you may have heard me on BBC Radio Stoke whilst eating your breakfast talking about my joint campaign with Stoke-on-Trent North and Kidsgrove MP Ruth Smeeth to bring Channel 4 to Stoke-on-Trent.
You might not know that the government is currently considering moving the broadcaster’s headquarters out of central London.
That’s why we’ve written to the Secretary of State to ask her to consider Stoke-on-Trent as the new home for Channel 4. In recent weeks, our city has joined together to celebrate our heritage, culture, and sporting prowess as we bid to be the UK City of Culture in 2021.
This process has showcased what we already know; Stoke-on-Trent is leading the world in the creative arts – not just with our world famous ceramic industry, but in gaming and digital design too. We are a former European City of Sport and a future City of Culture, the home of football legends such as Sir Stanley Matthews and Gordon Banks and darts champions Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis.
But we are a city that needs investment and support to attract new businesses to create better paid jobs. If the government is serious about decentralising away from London, naming Stoke-on-Trent the new home for Channel 4 would do more than signal their intent – it would ensure a massive economic boost for our city that could have a tremendous effect on wages and jobs.
What do you think? Please share this post and let's get some excitement behind the campaign! #localandproud
