I've signed Early Day Motion 1440, which supports the government's plans to place a £2 limit on Fixed Odds Betting Machines, while calling on the government to implement the reduced stake immediate rather than waiting until 2020.
Gambling addiction is a social problem that must be addressed, and in their current form Fixed Odds Betting Machines are a social blight. By reducing the amount that can be gambled, the opportunity for gambling companies to take advantage of some of the must vulnerable people in society is significantly reduced.
Fixed Odds Betting Machines have the highest number of problem gamblers of any form of gambling, with each individual machine taking an average of £53,000 from gamblers a year. I'm glad the government is taking the steps to tackle this social ill and I hope they offer a positive response to our call to implement the reduced stake immediately.

"That this House welcomes the Government's decision to cut the stake on Fixed Odds Betting Terminals to £2; acknowledges that a £2 stake is now supported by parties across this House; notes that a reduced stake will greatly improve the lives of problem and at-risk gamblers, as well as their families and wider communities; further notes with concern that each day £5 million is lost on such machines; notes with equal concern that the stake is not due to be reduced until April 2020; and calls on the Government to implement this new reduced stake of £2 immediately, to prevent any further gambling related harm or possible loss of life."
