I certainly understand the appeal of using Chinese Lanterns at events, but the risk they pose to livestock, crops, and the environment is clear. Fire and Rescue services across the country are opposed to the mass release of these lanterns simply due to the fire hazard they pose, given the complete lack of control there is over their flight path.
While many event organisers and UK companies have respected the voluntary code on their use, some companies such as the US company Viive Events have disregarded this. This can often result in local councils, fire services and police being faced with expensive court battles to try and prevent dangerous events from going ahead at a time where money is tight.
For that reason, I've signed Early Day Motion 1507, which calls for a ban on the use of flame-powered Chinese Lanterns. You can read the motion in full here: https://www.parliament.uk/business/publications/business-papers/commons/early-day-motions/edm-detail1/?edmnumber=1507&session=2017-19
