Early day motion 1453: Fire and Rescue Services

I'm appealing to Staffordshire MPs and the government to re-think their proposals to hand over governance control of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service to the Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Ellis. In a last ditch effort to raise the concerns of the public, local councillors, Firefighters and Trade Unions I have tabled an Early Day Motion calling for a humble address to annul the statutory instrument to hand over powers to the Police Commissioner with the support of Stoke-on-Trent North and Kidsgrove MP Ruth Smeeth.

There was little appetite from the public for the creation of the role of Police and Crime Commissioner role, there’s even less public support for the prospect of the PCC taking over the governance arrangements of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service. This is a final throw of the dice for the government to do the right thing and I would appeal to fellow Staffordshire MPs from all parties to support us and represent the views of their constituents. This isn’t about providing better governance; it’s the back door to further cuts.
